To Øl – The Elves Are Back!

Blog, News

Christmas is a season that really resonates with the Danes, one that is steeped in family, folklore and hygge. A real sense of tradition with the ‘big day’ actually being celebrated on the 24th of December.

And if there’s one brewery that knows how to celebrate the festive season in a slightly more irreverent fashion then it’s To Øl. Their Christmas beers have been honed and developed over the years with a focus on keeping everyone at the party happy no matter what your beery persuasion is.

This extended last year to include a fully-fledged social media campaign counting down the days of Christmas, as we discovered that there are two naughty elves (‘Jule Nisser’) running amok and causing mischief in the bowls of To Øl City and BRUS. Basically skiving off work, playing cards and drinking all the beer whilst encouraging the boss to get involved in a scooter burn out in the car park. It’s like watching a series of twisted mini John Lewis Xmas ad’s without the middle-class aspirations or tenuous links. Typically Danish and we love it.

Tie in Kasper Ledet’s blunt lesson in typography and design and you’ve got an annual series of beers that get straight to the seasonal point like no other brewery.

Whilst there are steadfast favourites that make the lineup every year, To Øl always seek to include new additions to the Christmas range. This year is no exception with three new barrel age beasts joining the soiree.

They include the absolute classic Yule Malt aged in both Panama Rum Barrels & Bourbon Barrels, a 12 month aged Dobblebock in Cognac and Calvados Barrels and a 12 month BA Xmas Quad with orange and spice. If they don’t jump to the top of your Santa’s want list then you must be a non-believer.

These beers continue To Øl’s love affair with all things dark and are the fruits of the fledgling barrel program at To Øl City that was started back in 2019.

Whilst we have all new To Øl stock, we also have a small supply of Yule Malt 2020. Carefully cellared by us and ready for your vertical tasting comparison. A brilliant beer in the first instance, we’re excited to see how this has developed. Massive raisin notes last year, who knows what pleasure will be bought this time around!

🎄 The To Øl Christmas Line Up 🎄

Starting out with the best tasting and named seasonal beer that the Christmas lo and no market has to offer. For fans of Implosion…

Doffing the cap to Christmas’s eternal long distance driver Chris Rea and guaranteed to leave you absolutely hangover free. And without any question that you did not get your arse out on the photocopier this year. This beer promotes smugness, safe driving and looks good in the fridge.

Putting a spin on the To Øl classic ‘Gose To Hollywood’, this particular Christmas iteration see’s Santa sacking off the present delivery in favour of a trip to the Bahamas. Can’t say we blame him. His drink of choice? A tropical fruited pastry sour with sun lounger. Not all Christmas beers are dark. Fruity as Kenneth Williams and a beautiful palate cleanser after that big lunch.

Affectionately known as ‘Pixie Juice’, this is the Elves drink of choice down at To Øl City. Coming in at a very respectable 4.6% this super fresh session IPA is the gift that keeps giving.

If you’re looking for that festive session beer that doesn’t leave you face down in the gutter after three cans, then this is for you. Colour-coded to match your best Christmas sweater too. A definite office party favourite.

A product of the To Øl City barrel ageing program, ‘X-Mas Quad‘ is one of this years new additions. A BA Belgian Quad that has been rested on orange peel and spices that takes Christmas in the direction of booze soaked fruit cakes, mulled wine notes, caramel and dark muscavado sugar. Lighter than its darker counterparts in body, this is the perfect Christmas cake match – although go steady and make room for that Yule Malt finisher!

A delicious imperial stout loaded and loaded and loaded with lactose, just until it couldn’t get any more heavy. You could say this is the Foie Gras force-feeding edition of a beer. But then again, it is Christmas after all…A whopping abv and smooth as a Morgan Freeman voiceover this beer is coming in THREE versions this year. The annual release, plus a singular Bourbon and Bourbon and Panama Rum Barrel versions. Fill your bellies!

365 Days Of Darkness is one of To Øl’s new additions to their Christmas range this year. We’re really looking forward to this one as it represents a lesser seen style in craft beer circles. Basically a dark lager that is stronger maltier version of its Bock sibling. What also makes this beer interesting is the fact that the lagering process took place in barrel – Cognac and Calvados Barrels at that – again lesser spotted barrels in the ageing game and ones that are going to add weight and flavour to this perfect winter beer.
